6 Common Job Application Mistakes And How To Avoid Them

As humans, we all make mistakes. Being a job seeker, it is important to minimize the mistakes in your job application as much as you can. The most frequent (and easily avoidable!) errors made on job applications are listed below, along with tips on how to avoid them.

i) Failing to proofread: Typos, grammatical errors, and formatting issues can make a bad impression on employers. Sometimes, misspelling your name or even worse, the company’s name can make a negative impression.
How to avoid it: Always proofread your job application before clicking the final send button. Also, check the company’s website for ensuring you’re writing their official name properly. It prevents you from looking sloppy.

ii) Not mentioning the job position in the subject: It is quite a common problem seen in many job applications. They send their CV but forget to mention the job position that they’re applying for. It is actually just a waste of time as you can be certain that the employer is not going to bother going through your application. This can also be seen as not being serious regarding the application and also can be counted as being careless.
How to avoid it: It is always wise to write a proper email mentioning the job position in the subject line which you’re applying for. This ensures more visibility and clarity of your job application.

iii) Not tailoring your resume and cover letter: Employers want to see how your skills and experiences align with the specific job they’re hiring for. So sending the same CV and cover letters to different companies is quite an irrelevant thing to do.
How to avoid it: It is extremely important to know the job description of the position you’re applying for and make sure you tailor your skills and experiences accordingly. It becomes easier to catch the attention of the employer if you do so.

iv) Not following directions: Employers often provide instructions on how to apply for a job, such as how to submit your application or what information to include. Failing to follow these instructions can make it appear that you’re not paying attention to detail.
How to avoid it: Always be attentive towards the direction that has been provided by the employer. Make sure that you go through every detail that has been given in the instructions provided by the employer.

v) Overemphasizing responsibilities instead of accomplishments: Employers want to see what you’ve achieved in your past roles, not just what your responsibilities were.
How to avoid it: Be mindful regarding what you’re writing in your application. Mention how you added value to your previous organization and show the potential employer what you’re bringing to their table.

vi) Failing to research the company: Employers want to know that you’re genuinely interested in working for them. Show that you’ve done your homework by researching the company and including relevant information in your application.
How to avoid it: While you’re applying for the job, properly research the company, its services/ products, its impact in the industry and other necessary information. Then include all the information in such a way that it emphasizes your genuineness towards the company and the job vacancy.
